Spodumene, whose name derives from the Greek spodos, means ash in reference to the most common color of this mineral, is part of the alkaline pyroxenes. The rough crystals have a prismatic shape with the surface striated in the direction of elongation.

Spodumene has cleavage planes in two directions, which is why it is a complicated mineral to process in the cutting phase.

Kunzite was discovered in 1902 by the gemologist G. F. Kunz, from whom it takes its name. This is the intense purplish lilac variety, it is easily recognizable for its particular shades and glassy shine.
